A first full evening of the Ampersand's 2012-2013 season starting at Minneapolis Central Library and then on to Form+Content Gallery.

Five Years: The Minnesota Book Artist Awards — "Come see the surprising and exciting ways that our book artists have stretched the concept of book arts. Approximately 30 examples from all five past years' Minnesota Book Artist Award winners will be on display. - BUZN 102.9

The Life and Art of Walter J. Breckenridge
Presented by John Moriarty

7:00 p.m. - Thursday, November 1

"John Moriarty worked with Breckenridge's daughter to edit the manuscript that became My Life in Natural History, Breckenridge's autobiography, generously illustrated with his paintings." - St. Paul Audubon Society

"Known for his paintings of birds and wildlife settings, Breckenridge also was the creative force behind many of the Bell Museum's nationally known dioramas. He also is widely recognized for pioneering the craft of wildlife filmmaking - many done in passionate response to human pressures facing animals and their ecosystems." - UM News

Sense of Place in Artist Books

"Within this international exhibition of artist books, a sense of place is represented in almost limitless ways. The books may be specific to a personal time, a world created, a place of advocacy, a space to heal trauma, or the documentation of journeys. Artists books offer strikingly unique environments for exploring ideas as well as means for communicating beyond those of the traditional book." - U of M Libraries

The exhibit also sparked a panel discussion with Sarah Bodman, Betty Bright, Jeff Rathermel, and Marianne Coombs viewable at the U of M Institute for Advanced Study

Ampersand Holiday Party

Other than the annual dinner this is often the most well attended Ampersand event of the season. If you have not been to an event for a while this would be your chance to see some familiar faces, as well as those that spark a dim recollection from last years holiday party or annual dinner.

Design Binding and Designer Book Binders of America

Jana Pullman, book artist, binder and conservator, lives in Mpls and has been involved in the book arts since 1983. She is an instructor at the MCBA and teaches workshops throughout the country. Pullman was named the 2013 Minnesota Book Artist of the year.

Innovations In Print Technology, Makig Book Publishing More accessible

7:00 p.m. - Thursday, March 28

Kevin Brown is the owner of Smart Set, Inc., a 20 year old graphic arts company in Minneapolis. Smart Set provides serices and products for most printing methods. Kevin gives regular lectures and workshops in the area and has served on the advisory board for the Graphic Design department at MCTC.

Chank Diesel
Font Designer & Alphabetician

7:00 p.m. - Thursday, April 11

"Chank strives to make fonts fun and accessible for both the average computer-user and professional designers. He distributes a diverse collection of display fonts through his website Chank.com and also creates custom fonts for corporate clients who want exclusive rights and a specific design for a typeface." - mnartists.org

"Minneapolis-based font designer Chank Diesel takes MN Original behind the letters as he designs a new font based on the old Hollywood Theater sign in Northeast Minneapolis. [H]is fonts have appeared on Taco Bell wrappers, Honeycomb cereal boxes, Tanqueray billboards, bottles of Ocean Spray cranberry drink, and in the title design for the movie James and the Giant Peach." - MN Original
